Spotlight on: Dr. Jennifer Nixon

Each month, we will feature a standout individual from the Tech Turn Up community.

This month, we’re shining the spotlight on Dr. Jennifer Nixon, Tech Turn Up Board Chair. Dr. Jennifer Nixon is on a mission to increase the knowledge of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in her community. We asked Dr. Jennifer a few questions:

What excites you most about Tech Turn Up’s mission and programs?

What excites me most about Tech Turn Up’s mission and programs is the unique way we integrate technology, art, and cultural diversity to empower students. Each program not only nurtures creativity and critical thinking but also celebrates the rich tapestry of backgrounds that our students bring to the table. Seeing young minds engage with STEAM in ways that resonate personally, whether through coding, animation, or artistic expression, is truly inspiring

If Tech Turn Up had unlimited funding, what dreams and ideas would you love to bring to life? First, I see creating an immersive STEAM center that offers state-of-the-art technology and art facilities. This space would provide students with hands-on experiences, from coding and robotics to digital storytelling and interactive art installations. I would also love to develop a robust scholarship program that ensures underrepresented students have access to our programs, regardless of their financial situation. This would help us cultivate a diverse community of innovators and creators.

If you could create any app or tech invention, no matter how wild, what would it do? I would develop an immersive virtual reality platform called “Connecting Cultures.” This app would allow users to experience diverse cultures through interactive storytelling, art, and music. Just imagine stepping into a virtual world where you can explore the streets of a tribe in Africa, participate in a traditional dance from India, or collaborate with artists from different countries to create a digital mural.
